The Devil’s Arithmetic

What Do You Think….

Numbers play an important role in our lives- social security numbers, locker numbers, sport team numbers, and so forth. In a paragraph, tell how you feel about having numbers assigned to people.

  1. I think that assigning numbers for the nazis was a fast and easy way to keep track of everybody in a concentration camp. But I think that the number system is a sick and disgusting way to control people. But then in sports numbers are sometimes assigned to people but not all ways. I think it is also really bad because the people who get tattooed are stuck with the tattoo for ever.

  2. i think it is pretty bad and the Jewish people shouldn’t get the numbers on their arms. Especially the little baby’s. The Nazi’s should have just left the Jewish people alone.

  3. Well i think numbers are good for sports people so they can be recognized and to have for keeping your stuff secret like a bank account. But i don’t think people should be only recognized by that number.

  5. I think thats not the right way to to name people like thats just another way to ID people and the Nazi used that as way to name people. Its like being put in jail for doing nothing wrong

  6. Numbers give order and creates a hierachy….you associate #1 with the best. You can also look at how these numbers are so large (for the members of the concentration camps)….and the lower the number that the prisoner had, it meant in a way, the hardier they were. The Nazis were all about keeping order in their concentration camps and it takes away the identity of the people when they were assigned numbers….imagine not having a name……
