The Devil’s Arithmetic

The Author’s Craft…

Why do you think the author had no one believe that Hannah was from the future?

Write a paragraph that tells what you would do if you found yourself in a similar situation that Hannah finds herself.

  1. I would try to tell them what would happen with the Nazis and I would show them my cellphone. Also I would convince them by telling them what would be invented in the next decades.

  2. If I was sent to the past and no one believed I was from the future, I would think that I was stuck in the past and never be able to go home. It would be scary being stuck in a world where you don’t belong. But the good thing would be is that you would be able to warn people from things that will happen to them, like the Holocaust. Then maybe people would believe that you were from the future.

  4. I think that the author had no one believe that Hannah was from the future because all the things that Hannah said were incredible/impossible to all girls at that time. Because girls didn’t go to school at that time, only boys did. Also Hannah told them all the books that she had read, Yentl, and Conan the barbarian, and about Star Wars, and the Fiddler on the Roof, and the plot line of Little Women. And when Hannah recited the phrase “Gosh, Toto, this sure doesn’t look like Kansas!” from The Wizard of OZ, the other girls asked “What’s Kansas?” I think that the author had no one believe that Hannah was from the future because most of the things Hannah told them sounded unreal.

  6. I think the author mad no one believe that Hannah was Hannah and not Chaya because if they had figured out that she was from the future than they might lock her up for being a ‘witch’ or they might rely more on her than before and they would trust her word that might not be the truth and they might all get captured by the Nazi’s.
I think if i was in Hannah’s position i would sit Gitl and Shmuel down and explain without interuptions, and I would see what they thought if it didn’t work than i would try until they got it.
